Technology is continuously evolving. Organizations that are Service Providers must realise the fact that the skills and expertise of the staff are key elements in the overall success of every organisation.
Training is non negotiable and as such a sizable portion of the company’s budget should set aside for research and development (R & D) programs that involve training of staff each year.
From my own personal stand point, the cost of training cannot be compared to the cost of customers loosing the confidence in you. Companies have got to demonstrate product knowledge and authority in the face of their customers.
When staff are trained regularly by the employer, there is an assurance of increase in workplace safety, productivity, satisfaction and feeling of motivation.
Investing in training and development by the employer may seem expensive and moreover, during staff training sessions, it is obvious that employees will miss out on job time which eventually may lead to delay in project delivery.
Despite the seeming potential drawbacks, training and development come with benefits for both the company as a whole and the individual employees, benefits that and that make the cost and time a worthwhile.
For a service provider, staff training is highly essential in order to match skills with productivity. Moreover, key following key areas have been identified as reasons why ICT companies should invest on staff staff training and development schemes.
Address areas of weaknesses
Most employees lack basic skills to accomplish tasks fast enough within an acceptable time and this becomes a weakness to the staff and by extension the long run effect will be on the company. A training program allows you to strengthen those skills that each employee needs to improve. A development program brings all employees to a higher level so they all have similar skills and knowledge. This helps reduce any weak links within the company who rely heavily on others to complete basic work tasks. Providing the necessary training creates an overall knowledgeable staff with employees who can take over for one another as needed, work on teams or work independently without constant help and supervision from others.
Improvement in employee performance
Employees who receive necessary training regularly will become more competent and be able to perform better on their job roles because they have developed the right skills through training. They become better prepared for tasks ahead of time and are more aware of safety practices and work procedures. Regular training may also build confidence because the employees have better understanding of the industry and can relate it to their job responsibilities which eventually makes them more confident. This confidence can create a leverage through which the employee can perform better and think of new ideas that are for the betterment of the organization.
As a company aspiring to be an industry leader, grooming the right talents with skills and competence is a key strategic and long term approach.
An IT company should be consistent in their training itinerary. A good training culture and plan will not only equip employees with skills but ensure they stay in touch with the ever changing technologies. Constant training and development programs enables employees to have a consistent experience and background knowledge The consistency is particularly relevant for the company’s basic policies and procedures. All employees need to be aware of the expectations and procedures within the company.
When a company sends her staff on regular training programs, the employees tend to have a feeling of job satisfaction. They believe they have advantage over employees in other companies who are left to seek out training opportunities on their own. The investment in training that a company makes shows the employees they are valued.
Employees may have the opportunity to be sent on training that on their own they would not have been able to access such programs. They will feel appreciated and challenged through these opportunities and may eventually do more and be commuted to the goals of the organization.
